NHTSA Conducts Defective Airbag Investigation

Georgia Defective Auto ProductIf you have a Honda Odyssey, your vehicle may currently be under investigation for faulty airbags. According to a NBC News report, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into 320,000 Honda minivans for defective airbags that spontaneously deploy. Officials with the NHTSA have received six complaints from owners of Odysseys from model years 2003 through 2004 who say that their airbags suddenly deployed. In those reported incidents, three people were injured. There have been no reported traffic accidents caused by these potentially defective airbags, but the sudden and powerful way in which the airbags deploy can cause blunt force injuries to the driver and front seat passenger.

According to NHTSA, there have been an additional 41 consumer complaints regarding the airbag warning light on the same Honda Odysseys. It is unclear if Honda will have to issue an auto safety recall because of these malfunctioning airbag systems. Honda has recalled more than 1 million vehicles for airbag-related defects over the last two years.

There have already been over 3 million vehicles recalled this year because of defective airbags manufactured by Takata Corporation, the world’s second largest supplier of airbags. Companies that have recently issued recalls because of defective Takata Corporation airbags include Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Chrysler, BMW, and General Motors.

It is advisable for all vehicle owners to look into whether or not their vehicle has been recently recalled. The official website for the NHTSA lists all recent voluntary and mandatory recalls. Motorists can also find information regarding whether or not their vehicle is currently under investigation for defective parts. It is important to stay abreast of these issues because a sudden mechanical failure can lead to a devastating car accident.
