A 21-year-old Suwanee woman was killed in an Atlanta car accident when the vehicle in which she was a passenger left the roadway and crashed. According to a My Fox Atlanta news report, the fatal crash occurred on the ramp from Interstate 75 southbound to Interstate 85 northbound in Atlanta. Officials say the 20-year-old driver of the car was under the influence when her vehicle left the road and struck an embankment. Her passenger was killed in the crash. The driver was charged with driving under the influence, homicide by vehicle, and a number of other offenses.

According to Georgia Statute 40-6-393: “Any person who, without malice aforethought, causes the death of another person,” by driving recklessly, or driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol…commits the offense of homicide by vehicle in the first degree and, upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by imprisonment for not less than three years nor more than 15 years.”

The family of someone killed by a drunk driver would be well advised to contact an experienced personal injury attorney who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights are protected. If it is determined that the driver was drunk or negligent at the time of the crash, then financial compensation may be available for the family’s terrible loss. In such cases, compensation may be awarded for medical bills, lost wages, funeral expenses, and other related damages.
