A sixteen year-old child was treated by a psychiatrist for anxiety disorder and panic attacks. The psychiatrist prescribed a regimen of medications, including 12 mg. of Xanax on a daily basis. This drug in combination with many other drugs that had been prescribed resulted in respiratory arrest and death.

In this case, it was our position that the prescriptions issued for this young man were inappropriate and greatly exceeded even the maximum doses recommended by the drug manufacturers for adults. The safety of this drug for use in children, according to the manufacturer, had not been established.
