High Powered Magnets Recalled After Death
Small, high-powered magnets are regularly used in toys and games. These small magnets seem harmless enough, but they can do significant damage to a child if they are swallowed. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, nearly 3,000 children required emergency medical attention between the years 2009 and 2013 after swallowing magnets. When multiple magnets are swallowed, they can draw together with great force pinching and piercing parts of the gastrointestinal system.Read more…
Distracted Pedestrian Killed While Crossing Street
A 59-year-old man was killed in a car accident when a vehicle struck him as he crossed the street. According to a news report in The Athens Banner-Herald, the fatal pedestrian accident occurred on Atlanta Highway near the Bogart Pantry convenience store. Officials believe the victim may have been talking on his cellphone when he tried to cross the road. An eastbound vehicle driven by a 23-year-old Statham woman struck him. She has not been charged for the crash.
It is unclear from the report if the victim of this tragic crash was talking on the phone or if his cellphone use is relevant to the crash. Investigators will have to determine why the driver was unable to avoid the collision and if the pedestrian carelessly stepped into traffic at an unsafe time and location.
A recent nationwide study conducted at The Ohio State University found that over 1,500 pedestrians were estimated to receive treatment for injuries related to using a cell phone while walking in the year 2010. This is a growing problem considering that only 256 people required emergency medical attention after being hurt walking while on the phone back in 2005. According to a professor of emergency medicine at the University of Buffalo, distracted walking results in more injuries per mile than distracted driving.Read more…
Study Shows Half of Distracted Teen Drivers Are Talking to Parents
One of the best ways to teach your child safe driving habits is to lead by example. Many parents, however, make the mistake of teaching their child that it is okay to drive while distracted by sending texts and making phone calls when behind the wheel. A new study shows some parents not only model poor behavior, but also are the cause of their child’s distraction.
According to a new study by Parallel Consulting, as reported in HealthDay, up to half of all teens talking on cellphones while driving are talking to their parents. This means that many parents are complicit in distracting their children. When your child calls you, or when you call your child, ask if he or she is behind the wheel. If your child is driving, simply call back later or have him or her pull over. Distracted driving is simply too dangerous, especially when the driver is young and inexperienced behind the wheel.Read more…
Dangerous Products You May Have in Your Home
You may have dangerous products in your home right now that have been recalled because of the injuries and illnesses they may have caused. There are hundreds of products recalled every year and a new report by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) shows that less that 5 percent of recalled products are returned or repaired. This means that the vast majority of consumers who have purchased hazardous products that have been recalled either don’t bother to act or are not aware that they are in danger.
The director of the advocacy group Kids in Danger has stated that most recalled products remain in consumer homes. A spokesperson with DailyFinance.com recommends consumers research their products on SaferProducts.gov before selling them online or in a yard sale. It is especially important if the products you regularly use with your children have been recalled.Read more…
Proving a Medical Malpractice Lawsuit
If you have sustained significant losses because of mistakes made by a medical professional, you may want to research your legal options. Victims of egregious errors and negligence can file a medical malpractice claim against the at-fault party. Experiencing an undesirable outcome from medical treatment is not, however, enough to win a malpractice claim. You will have to prove your case.
All healthcare providers have a legal duty to provide care that meets professional standards. In order to have a successful malpractice case, you will need to prove that the doctor did not meet the required standard of care.Read more…
