It’s amazing how a simple act of negligence can bring tragedy to a young family in a matter of seconds. According to a story on Atlanta’s 11alive news last month, a small truck carrying a married couple and their two young daughters was struck by a runaway tractor trailer while driving down Highway 41 in Emerson, Georgia. The mother, Kyra Karr, 31, was killed in the truck accident; her husband, Reed Karr, 36, and their two daughter were hospitalized in serious but stable condition. It took rescue crews two hours to extract the three survivors from their wrecked vehicle.Read more…

“Heartbreaking” is the only word that can come close to describing what happened in suburban Clayton County last month. According to a story in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, a woman and her two children were crossing Georgia 138 when her Honda Accord was T-boned by a semi truck. The woman survived with a leg injury, but the children—a five year old boy and a six year old girl—died at the scene. The cause of the car accident has not yet been determined, but a witness at the scene reported that the mother claimed that her brakes “went out.” Witnesses also say that both the mother and the truck’s driver were devastated.Read more…

doctor giving a consultation

Earlier this summer, Melissa Gravitt won a substantial malpractice suit against her former Augusta OBGYN, Dr. Peter Grossman. According to an article in The Augusta Chronicle, in 2011, the 36 year old Gravitt underwent a laparoscopic surgical procedure to increase her possibility of becoming pregnant. During the operation, she suffered a small bowel perforation. Because bowel perforation is considered an acceptable risk for that type of surgery, it was not the cause for Ms. Gravitt’s claim. It was the doctor’s aftercare negligence that brought the medical malpractice suit.Read more…

Last April, 77 year old Carol Sheppard was rushed to the emergency room with a three inch gash on her head and bleeding on the brain. What else nurses and doctors discovered was very disturbing. Sheppard, a resident of the New London Healthcare Center for four years, was found to have a bed sore that went to her bone, severely ingrown toenails, an open wound on her hand with a bandage that hadn’t been changed for days. Hospital staff also described her as being in overall, poor hygiene.Read more…

People are dying at an alarming rate along Georgia roadways this year. According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, almost 700 people have been killed in the first seven months of 2015. That is 14 percent higher than the number of traffic deaths we had during the same period in 2014. We could hit 1,300 driving deaths statewide by the end of the year. Local CBS 46 speculates that this increase is related to the number of distracted drivers on the road.Read more…
