Atlanta Taxpayers Lose Millions as a Result of Accidents Caused by City Employees

By Grant Law Office on November 21, 2012

When Atlanta car accidents result from the negligence on the part of the city or city employees, it is the taxpayers who foot the bill. According to a news report in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the city has paid more than $3.27 million to settle accident claims since the beginning of 2008. The city has had to settle approximately 730 claims during that time period at an average of $4,500 per settlement.

According to the report, the police, watershed and public works departments accounted for the majority of the settlements. Any time a car accident occurs involving a police officer, for example, the injured victim can file a claim against the city. One woman was paid $405,000 after she suffered severe injuries when an Atlanta police officer crashed into her.Read more…

Teaching Children about Brain Damage Can Encourage Bicycle Helmet Use

By Grant Law Office on November 14, 2012

Teaching your child about brain injuries may increase the likelihood that your child will wear a helmet. According to a recent news report in The Atlanta Business Chronicle, 92.6 percent of the children who received brain injury education were using a helmet on every ride a month after the program took place. Researchers with Georgia Health Sciences University provided brain injury prevention and bicycle helmet safety information to 120 children aged 5 to 18 and found that 96.2 percent who received the information were still wearing helmets three months later. The study points out that only 80 percent of children who received an abbreviated version of the information were still wearing a helmet.

If you have a child who rides a bike, it is crucial that you encourage him or her to wear a helmet every time. Bicycle helmet use greatly reduces the chances of fatal brain injuries, yet many children ride without them. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), only one in four children aged 4 to 15 wear a helmet when they ride a bike. Teenagers almost never wear one.Read more…

Paying for Medical Treatment and Expenses after a Georgia Car Accident

By Grant Law Office on November 7, 2012

medical and hospital billing records

If you have been injured in a Georgia car accident, paying medical bills is probably the last thing on your mind. Getting the medical attention and treatment you need so you can return to normalcy is the only thing you should have to worry about. Unfortunately, all hospital visits can prove costly, and many injured victims of car accidents are sent substantial bills that they have no way of paying.

It is important to understand the basics of how hospital billing works. Hospitals bill patients the full cost of treatment, but they negotiate with insurance companies for reduced rates. Therefore, it is in the hospital’s best interest for a patient to pay the bill before insurance companies get involved. It is important not to pay a bill without first asking questions and speaking with your insurance provider.Read more…

Atlanta Personal Injury Lawyer Offers Pedestrian Safety Tips for Halloween Night

By Grant Law Office on October 29, 2012

yellow & black children pedestrian sign

Personal injury lawyer Wayne Grant and the legal team at The Law Offices of Wayne Grant, P.C. know that there are a number of steps that you can take to help keep this Halloween a safe and fun experience for your family. It is critical that parents know where their children are at all times. Children 12 and under should be accompanied by a responsible adult while trick-or-treating, and teenagers should be given a cell phone so they can contact their parents in case of an emergency. All children should be repeatedly taught how to be safe while trick-or-treating around the neighborhood.

The best way to prevent a serious injury pedestrian accident in Georgia is to make sure that children are visible. Children and parents should carry flashlights. Additionally, it is a good idea to use reflective tape on costumes and treat bags to enhance visibility. It is also important to choose the right costume as well. Wearing makeup is much safer than wearing a mask that may restricts your child’s vision. You may also consider suggesting a costume that is bright and easier to see in the dark. A dark cloak or gown will be difficult to see from a distance, while something as simple as a glow stick or light-up jewelry can help make children more visible to drivers.Read more…

By Grant Law Office on October 26, 2012

biker driving down two-lane road

In December 2009, a woman was injured in an Atlanta motorcycle accident when her vehicle crashed into a large pothole. According to a My Fox Atlanta news report, documents show that the city of Atlanta had been warned of the pothole back in October 2009, two months before the crash. Officials say that a metal plate was left over the pothole, but full repairs were not made until days after the accident. The city later agreed to pay the woman injured in the crash $220,000 to settle her lawsuit.

Determining liability for an Atlanta traffic accident can be a complicated process. Potentially liable parties for a traffic accident include motorists involved in the accident, the manufacturer of a potentially defective auto part, or even the city if the accident occurred as the result of a dangerous roadway condition.Read more…

Georgia Man Paralyzed in Drunk Driving Car Accident

By Grant Law Office on October 22, 2012

A Georgia man is undergoing treatment after becoming paralyzed in a drunk driving accident. According to a My Fox Atlanta news report, the man was injured in a DUI accident while on vacation in Trinidad and Tobago. The victim had recently finished EMT training so he was able to guide first responders through the process of stabilizing his spine after he suffered five broken vertebrae. After being poorly treated and misdiagnosed in two facilities, he finally received adequate care after being flown back to Georgia, the news report states. At this juncture, he has control of his head, shoulders, and arms, and hopes to one day regain control of his hands.

Medical professionals treating a spinal cord injury will first have to determine if the victim has lost control of normal breathing. Next, they will have to immobilize the victim in a cervical collar and backboard. As soon as possible, doctors will diagnose the patient and decrease the amount of damage to the spinal cord by reducing the swelling. After that, doctors may have to relieve pressure on the spinal cord through surgery. Unfortunately, these procedures are just the beginning of a long road to recovery for victims of catastrophic injuries, and many do not fully recover.Read more…

Bicyclist Critically Injured in Marietta Hit-and-Run Crash

By Grant Law Office on October 18, 2012

A 49-year-old man was injured in a Marietta car accident when a car struck his bicycle and drove away. According to a news report in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the hit-and-run accident occurred on southbound Canton Road north of Piedmont Road in Marietta. Officials say a dark compact car struck the cyclist from behind before leaving the scene of the crash. The victim of this bicycle accident has been listed in critical condition. The authorities are searching for a vehicle that may have damage to its front passenger-side fender, hood, and windshield.

It is illegal to leave the scene of an accident when someone has suffered an injury. Under Georgia Statute 40-6-270: “The driver of any vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to or the death of any person or in damage to a vehicle which is driven or attended by any person shall immediately stop such vehicle at the scene of the accident or shall stop as close thereto as possible and forthwith return to the scene of the accident.”Read more…

Woman Critically Injured in Columbus Motorcycle Accident

By Grant Law Office on October 15, 2012

A 24-year-old woman was injured in a Georgia traffic accident involving a head-on collision between a motorcycle and an SUV. According to a WLTZ news report, the motorcycle crash occurred at Milgen Road and Milgen Court in Columbus. Officials are trying to determine if the victim’s motorcycle crossed the centerline before crashing into the SUV. She has been listed in critical condition and the SUV’s driver was hospitalized with back and neck pain. It is not clear if either motorist will face citations for the collision.

There are a number of questions that arise whenever a head-on collision occurs at an intersection. Did the accident result from a motorist drifting into oncoming traffic, or did the collision occur as the result of a dangerous left turn? Did one of the drivers fail to yield the right of way at the intersection? Did one of the drivers enter oncoming traffic while fatigued or under the influence of drugs or alcohol? Did a dangerous roadway condition contribute to the crash?Read more…

Methylprednisolone acetate steroid injections manufactured by the New England Compounding Center (NECC) have caused 105 infections, eight of which have become fatal, as of October 8 due to being contaminated by fungal meningitis. As reported by USA Today, the contaminated injections were distributed to medical facilities in 23 states, including Georgia. The steroids were injected into patients’ spinal cords for treatment of pain and inflammation and were distributed to 76 clinics across the United States.

The Forsyth Street Ambulatory Surg. Center in Macon is the only facility in Georgia. Meningitis is a virus, bacteria, or fungus infection that causes inflammation of the protective membrane around the brain and spinal cord. If not treated quickly and properly, the infection can easily worsen and become fatal. Although fungal meningitis is not contagious, such cases are commonly very serious.Read more…
