Car Accidents Caused by Heavy Rains and High Winds

A morning of harsh weather conditions in Georgia contributed to a number of car accidents and safety issues. High winds, heavy rain, and even tornados reportedly touched down in Southern Georgia. According to The National Weather Service, a tornado damaged homes in the Holly Hills community of Laurens County north of Dublin the morning of February 21. At least one home was ruined and a number of others were damaged by falling trees. Traffic was affected by the dangerous conditions as well. In one instance, a child was injured when several trees fell near the roadway.

According to a news report in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a child was injured in a weather-related car accident at Oak Knoll and Crossgate drives. The stormy weather also contributed to a tractor-trailer crash that jammed traffic on 1-20 and 1-285. The truck was hauling copper wire when it overturned and slammed into the median wall. Officials believe that severe rainfall may have caused the truck to veer out of control.Read more…

Georgia Officials Urge All Pedestrians and Cyclists to Wear Bright Clothing

The majority of traffic deaths involving pedestrians and bicyclists occur at night. According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS), 32 percent of all fatal bike and pedestrian accidents happen between 8 p.m. and midnight, and 24 percent occur between midnight and 4 a.m. To combat this issue, local officials are urging all pedestrians and bicyclists to wear bright, reflective gear.

GOHS officials report that there were more than 130 pedestrian fatalities in Georgia in 2012. They accounted for about 11 percent of all traffic deaths that year. In addition to encouraging riders and walkers to wear bright clothes, Georgia officials passed a new law requiring drivers to leave at least three feet of space when passing bicyclists. Television Wall Mount Recalled for Injury Risks

Installing a television wall mount is a great way to elevate your screen without having to buy a large entertainment center. However, it is important to be careful in your choice of wall mount to ensure that it is the safest option for your home. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that Ergotron Interactive Wall Mounts have been recalled due to risk of injury. Officials say the “VESA” style mounting plate and the mounting ring on these products could fail, causing the television to fall and strike anyone nearby.

According to the official statement, approximately 195,000 Ergotron wall mount units in the United States have been recalled. The recall was issued after Ergotron received three reports of monitor plates separating from the wall mount system. No injuries were reported, but there was property damage to the components that fell. Anyone who owns one of the recalled wall mounts should contact Ergotron for a free repair kit right away.Read more…

Two Injured in Georgia Poultry Truck Crash

On the early morning of January 27, a poultry truck transporting live chickens was overturned in a collision that took place on Highway 129 at Lenox Drive, according to a report by AccessNorthyGa.com.

An official with the Georgia State Patrol said the crash, which occurred east of Gainesville, was caused by a 76-year-old man, a deputy with the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, who drove his vehicle into the path of the poultry-carrying truck. New Law in Georgia Targets Sports Brain Injury

According to a report by WALB News, Georgia’s Return to Play Act, a new law that was approved in 2013, is now effective. It addresses brain injury in student athletes and seeks to prevent serious brain injuries from occurring. More specifically, the law requires coaches to take student athletes out of games and/or practices if they show signs of concussions or other brain injuries and to report them for a medical evaluation.

305,000 Playtex Hip Hammock Infant Carriers Recalled in the United States

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently released a report on the mass recall of Playtex Hip Hammock infant carriers. In addition to 36,000 units in Canada, approximately 305,000 units in America are affected by the recall. Playtex Products Inc. is a company based in Dover, Delaware. All units were manufactured in China.

A total of 87 defect and/or injury reports related to the infant carriers prompted an investigation and the subsequent recall of the product. All of the reports involved instances of the buckles cracking or breaking altogether. Two of these incidents resulted in injuries, one of which involved an emergency room visit.
